Washington [United States], June 7 (NT): United States President Donald Trump has asked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that didn't Canada burn down the White House in 1812.

Over a bad-tempered phone call on May 25, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked the United States President as to how he could give explanation for the tariffs as a national security issue, to which Trump acted in response saying, "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" Trump raised questions referring to the War of 1812.

This statement comes after new tariffs were slapped by the Trump administration targeting steel and aluminum imports coming from Canada.

According to CNN, the British troops burnt down the White House during the War of 1812. It is believed that the British attack on Washington was in revenge for the American attack on York, Ontario, in territory that finally became Canada and back then, it was a British colony.

Earlier on Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discarded the United States' (US) proposal to crumb the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and ink a bilateral trade deal.

Prior this Trump said that if the revised NAFTA deal gets inked, he shall drop the newly-imposed 25 percent tariffs on the aluminum and steel products.

Worth mention here NAFTA is an agreement penciled by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America, which came into force on January 1, 1994. (NT)
