U-16 sailors win 5 medals in Oman Sailing Championship 2018

New Delhi [India], Aug 10 (NT): Six junior sailors from the Indian contingent won 5 medals in Oman Sailing Championship 2018. There were six participants, out of which five returned home with five medals haul, including three golds, a silver, and a bronze.

Ritika Dangi bagged gold in the Optimist class, while Uma Chauhan clinched bronze in the same race. In the Optimist class boys' race, Ashish Vishwakarma won gold and Neel Anand grabbed the silver. In the Laser 4.7 Class, Satish Yadav won the gold medal.

The weeklong competition organized between August 2 to 8 saw 130 sailors between the ages of 10 and 17 contend in various races at the Sur Sailing School.

Admiral Sunil Lanba and the president of the Yachting Association of India (YAI) acclaimed participants for the performance of the Indian sailors and congratulated the team.

"These 13 to 16-year-old sailors are the future Olympic medal hopes for the country," said Admiral Lanba as quoted by ANI.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports now is seeking after the training and the overall grooming of these young sailors with aiming a podium finish at the upcoming Olympics. Dedicated training has been passed on to these young under 16 sailors by the YAI. (NT)
