NEW DELHI: Counting of votes began today at 8 AM for the bypolls in the Lok Sabha seats of Phulpur and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Here's all you need to know about the UP bypolls and what impact of bypolls will occur:

1) The bypolls had held after UP CM Adityanath and Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya vacated their Lok Sabha seats of Gorakhpur and Phulpur, respectively, upon being elected to the state Legislative Council last year after Assembly Polls.

2) Voting for the two seats held on Sunday. While 47 per cent of the voters exercised their franchise in Gorakhpur, in Phulpur very lower 38 per cent votes recorded.

3) BJP’s Kaushalendra Singh Patel from Phulpur and Upendra Dutt Shukla from Gorakhpur against the Samajwadi Party's (SP) Pravin Nishad and Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel respectively contested while The grand old Party Congress nominated Sureetha Kareem for Gorakhpur and Manish Mishra for the Phulpur Lok Sabha seat.

4) The triangular bypolls-race promises to be fascinating as the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) extended support to the SP so as to completely take on the Saffron BJP.

5) The fate of the SP-BSP experiment could lay concretely on the way for the two major players in Uttar Pradesh to make alliance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to oppose the BJP. In the last state elections, as well as in the last Lok Sabha elections, both the SP and the BSP got a huge defeat from the BJP.

6) For the BJP, Gorakhpur is major seat as it is the stronghold of the chief minister Yogi, who has represented the seat in the Lok Sabha five times.

7) Phulpur, who is once the stronghold of the Congress and represented by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, observed a saffron gush in the 2014 Lok Sabha election, when Keshav Prasad Maurya won the seat.

8) The BJP is upset due to the SP-BSP association. SP-BSP association will eat Dalit votes, especially in Phulpur. in fact, Phulpur has never been a BJP stronghold.
