The US asked India to curb import of Iranian Oil, threaten for the secondary sanctions

Amid the tension between the United States of America(USA) and Iran, the former has asked India to curb the import of Iranian oil. Notably, in May the USA has withdrawn from the nuclear deal that was made between Iran and six other nations. After which the trump government order to reimpose the sanctions that were suspended under the accord.

For the sanctions that were getting imposed again the world power USA asserting countries to curb the oil import from Iran by November 4 and further threaten that no exemption will be accepted for the same.

On Wednesday, the US ambassador to the United Nations asked India PM Narendra Modi to cut the import from Iran but allowed to use Iranian port as the corridor to Afghanistan. Haley, after her meeting with Modi in New Delhi, reported in an interview that “Sanctions are coming(on Iran) and we are going forward on that, and with India and the US building strong relationships we hoped that they would lessen their dependence on Iran.” Notably, India is the second largest buyer of Iran in terms of crude oil and Indian traders are totally dependent on Iran for most of their oil business.

The move will affect Indian economy harshly, on this the the US ambassador further said: “There is a will, a political will, from both side to figure out how to make this work” She added “Prime Minister Modi very much understands where we are with Iran, he didn’t criticize it, he understood it and he also understood that relationship with the US is strong and important and needs to stay that way.”

Other countries that are also major buyers of Iranian oil are in talks with the US to escape out from the reverse action. For India, Haley said that the implications of Iran-related sanctions would be discussed when the 2+2 meeting between foreign and defence ministers of both will be held. Reports said that the meeting which was supposed to executed on 6th July is postponed while stating unavoidable reasons for the same.

Before Haley, some US officials informed warned India of secondary sanctions for going against the ban.
