In the precedent, the proposed bridge has observered numerous false starts. The plan has been in the construction for a decade now, and in this time still the organization liable for the project has changed multiple time, right from the Public Works Department to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority to the MSRDC.

According to the plan is to have a total of six lanes, three in each direction.

MSRDC said, “The Sion-Panvel Highway has been widened to 10 lanes, five in each direction. But when motorists approach the Vashi creek bridge there are three lanes for either direction, thereby becoming a bottleneck.Once the DPR is submitted, the authorities intend to put up the proposal in front of the state cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure. Only after a nod from this committee the project is expected to start taking shape.”

The bridge is significant as it will linkage the island city of Mumbai with Navi Mumbai and the rest of the country.
