Instant messaging service, Whatsapp, has now emerged as a major platform for sharing news after its success and popularity in chatting, and apparently, it is damaging its owner Facebook. This claim has been made in a new report.

The authors of 'Digital News Report 2017' have to say, "We have been watching Whatsapp's growth for some time now, but its increase in news usage has increased by 15 per cent."

It said that 51 percent of the people participating in the survey said that they use Whatsapp to share or discuss news, whereas in the US this ratio is only 3 percent.

In addition to Malaysia, many markets including Brazil (46 per cent) and Spain (32 per cent) are using Whatsapp for news and sharing, and people are leaving Facebook for it. Researchers found that Facebook's use of news has dropped into countries surveyed by them.

This research was done by the researchers of the Reuters Institute for Study of Journalism. He studied the figures of 34 countries in Europe, America, and Asia, and about 70,000 people participated in it.
