Pope Francis stoutly protected immigrants at his Christmas Eve Mass on Sunday, comparing them to Mary and Joseph finding no place to reside in Bethlehem and asserting reliance demands that foreigners be given welcome.

Pope Francis,  here is celebrate his fifth Christmas as chief of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, showed the way to a solemn Mass for about 10,000 people in St. Peter's Basilica as many others goes behind the service from the square outside.

Security was tightened, with participants checked as they moved St. Peter's Square even ahead of going through metal detectors to come in the basilica. The square had been cleared out hours before thus security procedures could be executed.

The Gospel reading at the Mass in Christendom's biggest church narrated the Biblical story of how Mary and Jesus had to journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem to be listed for a census directed order by Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus.

The 81-year-old pope was born of Italian immigrant stock in Argentina.He has made defense of migrants a major board of his papacy, over and over again laid him at triggers among politicians.

On Christmas Day, Francis will deliver his address on twice-yearly "Urbi et Orbi” to the City and to the World with his blessing and message from the central balcony of St. Peters Basilica.
