On Tuesday, Australia recorded its highest-ever number of Covid-19 fatalities, as the sudden surge pushed hospitalisation rates to record highs.

According to media reports, a total of 74 Covid-19-related deaths have been recorded in the country's three worst-affected states, including 36 in New South Wales (NSW), a new high for a single day.

The country's overall death toll now stands at 2,776. At response to increased hospitalizations, the neighbouring state of Victoria announced a "code brown" in hospitals on Tuesday, which gives hospitals the authority to postpone non-urgent health services and cancel healthcare workers' leave.

Meanwhile, the country's overall Covid-19 caseload increased to 1,876,035.
