A Downing Street collision suspect is charged with using pornographic images

London: On Saturday, London police announced that a man who had been detained following a car accident into the gates of Downing Street, where British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's office is located, had been charged separately with creating indecent images of children.

The 43-year-old was remanded in custody after making an appearance in court on Saturday in connection with the photos, according to a statement from the police. He is scheduled to return on June 23 to Southwark Crown Court.

After the incident on Downing Street, which was reported to have involved no injuries, he was detained on Thursday on suspicion of causing criminal damage and driving recklessly. Before disclosing the specifics of the other charge, police stated that he had been released pending additional investigation into that incident.

The collision is not being treated as "terror-related," according to London police, who also stated that counterterrorism officers are assisting with the investigation.

On Thursday, a car drove up to the gate at a slow speed, prompting police to establish a perimeter outside Downing Street. After the incident, the main gate appeared to be unharmed.

Police stated that they were not treating the incident as having ties to terrorism because no one was hurt. The Metropolitan Police reported that local officers, not counterterrorism detectives, were in charge of the investigation after they detained a man on suspicion of criminal damage and reckless driving

At the time of the accident, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was in his office, but according to reports, he left right away.

It wasn't immediately obvious whether the collision was intentional. A silver hatchback car was seen in social media video footage driving slowly across Whitehall in the direction of the gates.

Soon after, the police cordon was lifted and the road outside Downing Street was once again open to traffic. At around 19:45 local time, the car was then loaded onto a police recovery vehicle and driven away.
