New Delhi: India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has taken up with the Pakistan government the issue of the forced conversion of a Sikh woman into Islam in Pakistan and demanded strict action against the culprits. S Jaishankar has also informed the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) in this regard. Jaishankar further said that the Indian government has also expressed hope that the Government of Pakistan will investigate it honestly and take strict action against those responsible for this incident.

It has also asked Pakistan to ensure the safety and welfare of members of minority communities in the country, including their places of worship. According to the information, a woman Sikh teacher was kidnapped at gunpoint in Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and forcibly married to the kidnapper by making her a Muslim. The NCM said in a statement that it had taken note of media reports about the abduction and forced conversion of a Sikh girl from Pakistan.

NCM President Iqbal Singh Lalpura, through a letter on August 22, had urged the External Affairs Minister to take up the matter with his counterpart in Pakistan so that such incidents do not recur and ensure the safety of Sikhs in the neighbouring country and take appropriate steps to prevent and combat hatred against them.
