Dhaka: A tragic incident has been reported in Jhalakathi, Bangladesh. On Friday (December 24, 2021), 39 people have lost their lives due to a fire on a ferry in the Sugandha river. More than 200 people are said to be victims of burn injuries. The fire broke out around 3 am. The fire was so severe that the three-storey ferry 'MY Obhijan' was burnt to ashes.

According to the report, the Additional Commissioner of Jhalakathi district Mohammad Najmul Alam said that about 1000 people were on board the ferry. The ferry was on its way from the capital Dhaka to the Barguna district. Fire Service Deputy Director Kamal Hussain Bhuiyan has informed that more than 70 people have been admitted to local hospitals for treatment. Local Police Chief Moinul Islam told the media that most of the people died due to fire and some drowned after jumping into the river. We have admitted about 100 people to hospitals in Barisal, he said. All of them are burnt.

According to Sayeedur Rahman, a survivor of the ferry fire, the fire broke out in the engine room around 3 am and started spreading rapidly. Many people jumped into the water to save their lives, some of whom managed to reach the shore. According to Rahman, when the smell of burning smelled, they too left their VIP cabin and jumped into the cold water with their wife and brother-in-law and swam to the shore. In Bangladesh, 52 people lost their lives in a fire at a food and drink factory in the industrial city of Rupganj in July this year. Another similar incident took place in August this year when a boat collided with a sand-laden cargo ship into the lake, slaughtering 20 people.
