Mumbai: On Tuesday night, in a horrific incident, a student fell off from a local train at Kurla railway station on the Central line in Mumbai, after a thief snatched her mobile phone in a moving train. According to reports, the 21-year-old law student suffered head injuries and is in a state of shock after the thief targeted her. The condition of the victim is currently stable but doctors have kept her under observation for 24 hours.

According to a report, the RPF personnel noticed the commotion on the platform and nabbed the accused. After an investigation was initiated in the matter, the man, identified as 21-year-old Umesh Gawli, turned out to be a history sheeter with at least nine past offences. Gawli lives in Chunabhatti and his mother and two brothers have criminal records too.

Here it is to be noted that The RPF personnel chased the accused along with an official of the Maharashtra Security Force (MSF). Meanwhile, the other RPF personnel rushed the woman to Rajawadi Hospital where she was admitted and administered five stitches. The Source report states that the incident took place when woman, who is an intern with a law firm in Parel, was heading home after work. The woman boarded the first-class ladies coach and around 8.15 pm, as the train reached Kurla, she stood near the exit as she wanted to alight at Vidyavihar. The report states that the man boarded the coach and snatched the phone and jumped off. As the woman had her earphones plugged in on the phone, even she got dragged out and fell on the platform when the man snatched her phone.

However, it is worth mention here that according to details by the woman’s father, the man got into the coach and while all the commuters shouted, he did not react and snatched the phone as the train was to reach the next station. “My daughter had put the phone on the handsfree mode. As the man started to run away with it, she got dragged along and fell on the platform. She hit her head on the platform and began to bleed,” her father was quoted in the report. The report states that the accused was brought to the RPF post where the stolen phone was recovered from him. While the interrogation was underway, the RPF checked the records and to their surprise, found he was booked in nine cases of theft, robbery and drug possession at Wadala, Kurla and Kalyan GRP and Nehru Nagar city police station.
