Kirkuk: At least seven members of the federal police were killed in an attack on Sunday near the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, where Daesh group militants are still active, according to police and government sources.
These people were being taken in a truck when the bomb exploded. According to a federal police officer, speaking under the condition of anonymity, there was a "direct small arms attack" near the village of Chalal al-Matar, blaming Daesh for the attack.

Seven policemen, including an officer, were killed in the attack, according to an interior ministry official in Baghdad. From 2014 to late 2017, Daesh brutally ruled large parts of Iraq and Syria, establishing a "caliphate" that was defeated by Iraqi forces aided by a US-led military coalition.
Daesh lost its last stronghold in Syria in 2019, near the Iraqi border. Even though the US-led anti-Daesh coalition ended its combat operations in Iraq in December last year, about 2,500 US troops are still stationed there as trainers.
