Chandigarh: A new variant of Covid, Omicron, has been found in a youth from Italy to Chandigarh. This created a stir in the health department. The news of the relief is that the covid report of 7 others who came in contact with the youth is negative. According to the Health Department, the 20-year-old arrived in India from Italy on November 22. After which he came to his relatives living in Chandigarh. The health department here got him tested for covid and found it positive. After which a sample of The New Delhi Omikon has been sent for the test on December 1. On the same day, a covid report was also conducted on 7 others who came in contact with the youth in which all of them have been found negative, though all have been quarantined. On 11th December, when the report of the youth was received by the Health Department, a new form of covid has been found in The Omicron. The youth has now been tested for covid again on Sunday. The Chandigarh Health Department is awaiting its report.
Earlier, a passenger, his wife, and servant who returned from South Africa in Chandigarh at the end of November were found infected with Covid. A 38-year-old man from Chandigarh Sector 36 returned to Chandigarh from South Africa on November 21. The RT-PCR test report at the airport was kept in solitary confinement at home as a precautionary measure when it came out negative. He, his wife, and servant were found infected in the RT-PCR test report conducted again on November 29.
The Chandigarh administration has further stepped up the crackdown in view of the threat of new strain omicrons of covid infection. RT-PCR tests have been made mandatory at the airport for passengers returning from 8 high-risk countries. UT administration officials have said that passengers have also been made quarantined for seven days along with the covid test.
