Noida: Crimes in Delhi-NCR are being reported on a regular basis and a daring robbery attempt in broad daylight left Noida locals horrified after thieves looted over Rs 40 lakh from a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM machine, which was being filled with cash by armed guards.

According to a source report, Mukesh Kumar, a 35-year-old witnessed a scene straight out of a Bollywood movie when he was taking a nap on his auto rickshaw’s passenger seat. Kumar said that it was 1:45 PM when he was disturbed by a loud sound emanating from outside the  SBI ATM at Kendriya Vihar 2 Society in Sector 82, Noida. While describing the incident, Kumar said that two men with handkerchiefs on their faces approached SBI ATM kiosk and started firing indiscriminately and looted a cash bag containing Rs 40 lakh.

Meanwhile, Indra Bahadur Singh, a 40-year-old security guard posted outside the ATM kiosk told HT that at least 12 rounds of ammunition were exchanged between the cash van guards and the robbers. The shootout occurred in the afternoon and the lives of dozens of locals were put at risk. In their bid to escape, the looted stash fell from the bag of the robbers as one of the suspects dropped the motorcycle when a Wagon R car rammed them from behind.

What happened next was even more chaotic as many locals rushed to grab some of the cash that was littered on the road while some others nabbed the culprits. A total of Rs 20 lakh was grabbed by the locals and the security guard who was trailing the criminals could salvage Rs 20 lakh.

The suspects were booked under Section 394(loot) of the Indian Penal Code.
