In a recent bizarre incident, a video of a beluga whale returning an iPhone to its owner after it fell in the sea, has gone viral on social media. The adorable video has generated a lot of reactions on social media with people exclaiming at the whale's response to the incident. As the video went viral, speculations are rife that it could be the 'spy' beluga whale trained by the Russian military which was recently found off north Norway recently. Fishermen who were near the Norwegian fishing village Inga had spotted the unusually friendly white whale. It had a strange harness with the words 'Equipment of St. Petersburg' written on it. The fishermen had said that the fish even tried to rub off against their hull and pull their straps and ropes. Its strange behaviour made people think that it was the whale had been given military-grade training in Russia. They had also said that the fish was very tame and seemed to be used to humans. According to a CNN report, the whale is enjoying its stay in Norway and locals are also fond of it.

To be noted that while Russia does not have a known history of using whales for military purposes, U.S.S.R. had a training program for dolphins which closed in the 1990s. According to The Guardian, a 2017 report by TV Zvezda, the Russian navy has been training beluga whales, seals and bottlenose dolphins in polar waters for military purposes. They have been trying to see if beluga whales could be used to "guard entrances to naval bases" in arctic regions, "assist deepwater divers and if necessary kill any strangers who enter their territory".
