New Delhi: The Modi government at the Centre on Monday told the top court that it is not mandatory to provide Aadhaar card information on the Co-WIN portal for corona vaccination. The Supreme Court asked the authorities not to put pressure on people to provide Aadhaar card information for corona vaccination. In a PIL, it has been claimed that some vaccination centres are insisting on submitting Aadhaar cards for vaccination.

Hearing the petition, a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant asked the authorities not to put pressure on people to give Aadhaar cards. Disposing of the PIL, the court said, "The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) filed an affidavit in the petition. It says that the Aadhaar card is not mandatory for registration on the CO-WIN portal. Apart from this, the remaining nine identity cards can also be used in this campaign," the court said, adding that Aadhaar is not mandatory to avail vaccination. The complaint of the petitioner is resolved. All concerned authorities will act as per the policy of the Health Ministry."

Advocate Aman Sharma, appearing for the ministry, told the court that the Aadhaar card was not the only condition. Even without any identity card, 87 lakh people have been vaccinated against corona. Advocate Mayank Kshirsagar, representing the petitioner, argued that the vaccination centres should not ask for an Aadhaar card. The petition also sought direction from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to make necessary changes in the Co-WIN portal in line with the relief.
