AAP now plans Tiranga Yatra in Ayodhya
Share:

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh will take out a “Tiranga Yatra” on September 14. The yatra will be conducted in Ayodhya with likely pitstops at the Ram Lalla temple and, en route to it, at Hanumangarhi.

The message behind the yatra is to distinguish the party's framing of Hindu identity, religion, and nationalism in "very different" terms from the "divisive" version of the BJP's. It comes after the party introduced a "Deshbhakti" course in schools, "embedded" in Constitutional values, according to AAP leaders. This is significant since AAP is attempting to gain traction in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand, where it has selected retired Indian Army Colonel Ajay Kothiyal as its Chief Ministerial candidate, promising to transform the hill state into the "spiritual capital for Hindus." AAP will also host Tiranga Yatras in Agra on Sunday and Noida on September 1 in the run-up to the Ayodhya event. This comes as it eyes other states, including Uttar Pradesh. Singh, who was one of the first political figures to raise concerns about certain land-purchase agreements for the planned Ram Temple in Ayodhya, said the campaign may be expanded to include all 403 seats in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Assembly elections early next year.  Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister and the leader of the AAP, not only praised the Supreme Court's decision in the Ayodhya title suit case, but he also declared that the Ram Temple will be included in the Delhi government's senior citizen trip plan.

While announcing Kothiyal as the AAP's chief ministerial candidate in Uttarakhand, Kejriwal emphasized not only the latter's credentials as a "deshbhakt fauji," but also his role in the reconstruction of the Kedarnath Temple and surrounding areas after the 2013 floods, earning him the moniker "Bhole ki fauji." In Delhi, where the AAP is in its third term, the party has worked tirelessly to redefine both nationalism and secularism. It established a specific school curriculum to "instil the sense of patriotism and nationhood."
