Police in Delhi took around 12 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) student wing members into custody for causing a disturbance at the Arun Jaitley Stadium during an IPL match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals. The officials reported that the detained individuals were chanting slogans and wearing t-shirts with the phrase 'Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se' printed on them.
The AAP has initiated a campaign named 'Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se' in response to the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate on charges related to money laundering linked with the excise policy. The party is urging people to support them in the upcoming elections as a way to protest Kejriwal's incarceration.
A senior police officer stated, "Our personnel are stationed at various spots within the stadium. Some individuals have been detained for causing a disturbance in one of the stands. They will be dealt with according to legal procedures and released thereafter. We advise all spectators to enjoy the game without engaging in such activities."
According to an official statement from the AAP, members of the party's student wing, Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), protested what they deemed as the "unlawful arrest" of the Delhi Chief Minister during the IPL match. The students donned t-shirts bearing the slogan 'Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se' and voiced their dissent against the BJP government.
The AAP also shared a video of the protest on its official social media account.
The ongoing Lok Sabha elections will see voting for the seven constituencies in Delhi taking place on May 25. As part of their campaign, the AAP released a rap-style song titled "Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se" last month at their headquarters in New Delhi. The song was penned and composed by Dilip Pandey, an AAP MLA and the chief party whip in the assembly.
