Chandigarh: A court has sentenced 10 women, including local councillor Nisha Singh, to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment for pelting stones at an Urban Housing Development Authority (HUDA) team in Gurugram, Haryana. The other seven convicts involved in the incident have been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Along with this, the court has also imposed a fine of 10 thousand rupees on the convicts. The court of Additional Sessions Judge Mona Singh pronounced the verdict on the sentence on Thursday (April 28, 2022).
According to police records, on May 15, 2015, JE Rajpal of HUDA along with higher officials was taking action to remove encroachments in Sector-47 Jhimmar Basti. It is alleged that during this time, advocates Khajan Singh, Pradeep Jaldar and the then woman councillor of the municipal corporation Nisha Singh instigated the mob. The mob then attacked the officers and the team. The mob also threw petrol bombs and LPG cylinders at the police team. The duty magistrate and 15 policemen were injured in the incident. An FIR was then lodged at the Sadar police station.
After the incident, all the 19 people, including Nisha Singh, were arrested and charged with rioting and attempting to murder. However, the case of an attempt to murder was dropped for want of evidence. After this, they all came out of jail on bail. However, now all the 17 people have been sent to Bhondsi jail after the court pronounced the sentence.
Who is Nisha Singh?
Nisha Singh had contested as an independent candidate from ward number 30 of Gurugram in the year 2011 and won. After this, she joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). She was a councillor until 2016. Nisha Singh has done her MBA in Finance from the London School of Economics after doing engineering from Mumbai University. After the course, she joined google company. She had previously worked in Siemens. However, she later left Google and got into politics.
