The 40-year-old Gough, who played the umpire in a total of 62 ODIs, including the last two ODI series between India and Australia in 2019 and 2020, recalled talks with Finch when Kohli and Rohit were batting brilliantly. Gough told 'Wisden Cricket Monthly', "I remember the match was going on between India and Australia, and Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had formed a big partnership."

He further said, "I was standing close to Aaron Finch at square leg and during the match, he told me that it is incredible to see these two legendary players playing. After this, he asked me how I would bowl him. I looked at them and said 'I am happy in the work I am doing. Think about what you have to do."

Gough was probably referring to the ODI between India and Australia in Bengaluru in January this year, in which Kohli (89) and Rohit (119) shared a 137-run partnership and India achieved the target of 286 runs by losing three wickets and led 2–1. He represented Durham in 67 matches during his first-class career.
