During the Question Hour in the Assembly, the Panchayat Raj Minister denied the claims of the BJP leaders that the Aasara pension scheme in the State was funded by the Centre. Errabelli Dayakar Rao clarified that the Centre’s share was only 1.8 per cent of the total expenditure, while the remaining 98.2 per cent which makes a total amount of Rs 11,725 crore was allocated by the State for 2020-21.

Dayakar Rao further added that "The State government spends Rs 977 crore per month for Aasara pension scheme, whereas the Centre’s contribution is only Rs 210 crore for the entire financial year". He showed the figures of Rs 2,016 which are being provided to senior citizens under the Aasara pension scheme. The minister clarified that Centre’s contribution was only Rs 200 up to 79 years and Rs 800 for those aged 80 years and above.

Earlier, the scheme was applicable to only the senior citizens, widowed women and differently-abled people. But the Telangana government has made changes to the plan and included weavers, toddy tappers and beedi workers apart from single women, HIV and Malayria patients. He also added that they are also considering dwarf persons as an extension of the scheme. According to him, CM Chandrashekhar Rao will shortly take a decision on the proposal to reduce the age limit for senior citizens pension from 65 to 57 years.
