Around 92,700 employees of state-run telecom companies BSNL and MTNL have applied for voluntary retirement (VRS). Having accepted all these applications can be reduced to Rs 8,800 crore spent for salaries annually. For these companies, the government had announced a revival package of Rs 68,751 crore in October. Both companies through this package had started taking applications for VRS from November.

The last date for application for VRS was December 3, which has now passed. BSNL chairman and MD PK Purwar said, 'About 78,300 employees have applied for VRS. With this, around 6000 employees have retired. We were expecting a total decrease of 82,000 employees. At the same time, MTNL chairman and MD Sunil Kumar said that 14,378 employees of the company have applied for VRS. After this, 4430 employees will be left. Thus, a total of 92,700 employees of BSNL and MTNL have applied for VRS.

MTNL Chairman and Managing Director Sunil Kumar said that the annual salary bill of the company will be reduced from Rs 2,272 crore to Rs 500 crore due to employees taking VRS. Kumar said that now they will have 4,430 employees, which is sufficient for operations. It is being told that the central government has announced the merger of BSNL and MTNL. The cabinet has stamped this in October. At the time of this announcement, the VRS scheme was also announced.
