GENEVA: The World Health Organization (WHO) stated on Wednesday that access to safe abortion is critical for women and girls.
Only around half of all abortions are performed in a safe and appropriate manner, whereas unsafe abortions result in around 39,000 deaths each year with millions more women being hospitalised with complications. The majority of these deaths occur in low-income nations (nearly 60% in Africa and 30% in Asia) and among those living in the most vulnerable circumstances.
"Almost every fatality and injury caused by unsafe abortion could have been avoided. As a result, we suggest that women and girls have access to abortion and family planning services as needed "In a statement, Craig Lissner, WHO's acting Director for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research, stated.
The World Health Organization has announced updated abortion care recommendations in an effort to protect women's and girls' health and help avoid the approximately 25 million unsafe abortions that occur each year.
To support quality abortion care, the guidelines cover clinical practise, health service delivery, and legal and legislative interventions. It includes task sharing across a broader spectrum of health providers, as well as providing access to medical abortion pills, allowing more women to seek safe abortion services, and ensuring that correct information on care is given to those who require it.
