Mumbai: A special court in Mumbai has refused to grant bail to former minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Nawab Malik in a money laundering case related to the activities of mafia kingpin Dawood Ibrahim. Special Judge RN Rokade had on November 14 reserved his order on Malik's bail plea after hearing arguments from both sides. Earlier, the court had said that it would give its verdict on November 24. However, on that day the court adjourned the matter till November 30 saying that the order was not ready. 

Significantly, the Central Investigation Agency Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Nawab Malik in February this year. He is currently in judicial custody and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital here. Malik had filed a regular bail application in the special court in July. Malik had sought bail on the ground that no serious offense was involved in the money laundering case against him. However, the investigating agency opposed the bail on the basis of the case lodged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Dawood Ibrahim and his associates. 

In this entire case, the ED had claimed that the accused Nawab Malik was working with Dawood Ibrahim and his sister Haseena Parkar and there was no question of his innocence. The ED's case against Malik is based on an FIR registered by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against Dawood Ibrahim, a designated global terrorist and prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai bombings case, and his associates.
