Action launched to identify 100 top drug mafia smugglers in the country: Mansukh Mandaviya

New Delhi: The government has identified 100 top drug mafia smugglers in India as part of a drive to curb drug trafficking and initiated legal action against them. This was stated by Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in a written reply to a question by N Ganeshamurthy on the point of the monsoon session of Parliament.

"According to the Bureau of Drug Control, the Ministry of Home Affairs has identified the top 100 drug traffickers/gangsters and initiated action against them under the Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Illicit Trade Act, 1988," Mandaviya said. He said that NCB has started work on 25 proposals on drug and psychotropic substance sine-trafficking after initiating the identification process from December 2019 and out of these, 21 proposals have been issued by the Department of Revenue.

The same Government said in Parliament that the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had conducted a national survey through the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on the extent and nature of drug use in the country. The survey found that about 16 crore people consume alcohol in the country, the highest use was found in the states of Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Punjab, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, etc. In the country, 31 million people use cannabis, ganja, and charas, with the highest usage reported in Sikkim, Nagaland, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Delhi, Mizoram, and Himachal Pradesh.
