LONDON: In the UK, a 21-year-old Afghan man, previously found guilty of two separate murders in Serbia, has been given a life sentence.

Lawjan Abdulrahimzai, who sought asylum in the UK in 2019, will spend at least 29 years in prison for killing 21-year-old Thomas Roberts last March outside a Subway restaurant in Bournemouth, Dorset, according to Sky News.

After his friend and Abdulrahimzai got into a fight outside a sandwich shop over an e-scooter, Roberts tried to serve as a "peacemaker". After a 24-second exchange in which Roberts slapped him in the face, Abdulrahimzai pulled out a knife that was hidden between two pairs of pants and stabbed Roberts twice.

According to testimony given at Salisbury Crown Court, the man fled into nearby woods, stashed the knife, and burned his pants, jacket and an Afghan flag he was using as a scarf.

Sentencing Abdulrahimzai to life on Wednesday, Judge Paul Dugdale reprimanded her for "taking the life of a decent man with a bright future who was loved so much by so many" in a matter of seconds.

"Your momentary act of extreme, senseless violence has resulted in a tragic loss to a family that they will feel for the rest of their lives."

According to Abdulrahimzai, he left Afghanistan after being tortured by the Taliban and seeing his parents murdered. He spent some time in Serbia before moving to the UK, where he killed two people in 2018. In his absence, he is found guilty of double murder and given a 20-year prison sentence.

Abdulrahimzai tricked the officers into thinking he was only 14, almost six years younger than he actually was, and the officers were unaware of this violent history. After being placed in foster care, one of her parents discovered she had a knife.

Cases and "red flags" will be ignored, according to the Home Office.
