At least 55 people have lost their lives and more than 150 were injured, mostly women, in a bomb blast near a school in the Shiite-dominated western part of The Afghan capital Kabul on Saturday (May 8). The Taliban has condemned the attack targeting civilians and has denied having a hand in it. Interior Department spokesperson Tariq Aryan said the injured were evacuated by ambulance from the site of the blast near Syed al-Shahada School in the shia-dominated Dast-e-Barchi area.
Three explosions are said to have taken place: Where It is learnt that residents of the area said that the blast was very severe. Naseer Rahimi said he heard three different blasts. However, there was no official confirmation about the claim. Rami said the death toll could increase in view of the intensity of the blast. He said the blast took place around 4.30 pm local time and the girls were leaving the school at that time. "I was with my classmates and we were leaving school when there was a huge explosion," said Zahra, a 15-year-old student who was injured in the blast. After 10 minutes, there was another explosion and a few minutes later another explosion took place.
No organization claimed responsibility for the attack: According to reports, no organization has claimed responsibility for the immediate attack, but the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks in the same Shia-dominated region in the past. The extremist Sunni Muslim group has declared war on minority Shia Muslims in Afghan, with the US blaming the Islamic State for last year's attack on a maternity hospital that has claimed the lives of several pregnant women and newborns.
