Kabul: More than 100 people have died in a mosque full of Shia Muslim worshippers in North Afghanistan on Friday. An officer has given information in this regard. Meanwhile, the Islamic State (IS) militant group has taken responsibility for the mosque bomb blast, saying its suicide bomber carried out the incident.

Amak news agency linked to IS informed about the claim of a terror outfit hours after an explosion during afternoon prayers at a mosque in Kunduz province. In his claim, IS identified the Fidayeen attacker as a Uighur Muslim and said the attack targeted both Shias and Taliban who were hindering the demands from China. Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi said the investigation into the case is underway.

The Islamic State group of militants has a long history of attacking Shia Muslims in Afghanistan. Those targeted on Friday are from the Hazara community, which has been a victim of discrimination in the Sunni-dominated country for a long time. The attack is a major attack after the withdrawal of US and NATO troops from Afghanistan in late August and the Taliban occupation of the country.
