In a significant move, the Afghanistan embassy declared the permanent closure of its diplomatic mission in New Delhi, officially ceasing operations effective November 23, 2023. The decision comes after persistent challenges cited from the Indian government, leading to the cessation of activities earlier on September 30. The embassy expressed hope for a favorable change in the Indian government's stance, enabling normal operation, but this expectation was not met.

Clarifying the closure in an official statement, the embassy emphasized that the decision was not a result of internal conflicts or allegiance shifts among diplomats, but rather stemmed from broader policy changes and shifting interests. They extended their sincere gratitude to the Afghan citizens in India for their understanding and support during the embassy's tenure.

Despite facing resource limitations, the Afghan embassy asserted that it had diligently worked for the betterment of Afghan citizens in India, especially considering the absence of a legitimate government in Kabul. Over the past twenty-seven months, there has been a notable decline in the Afghan community in India, with a significant decrease in refugees, students, and traders, resulting in almost a 50% reduction in numbers since August 2021.

Highlighting the challenges faced, the embassy lamented the minimal issuance of new visas during this period and efforts to undermine their image. They stressed their commitment to operating transparently and fairly based on Afghanistan's goodwill and historic ties with India.

The embassy further stated its efforts to advocate for humanitarian aid, education scholarships, trade facilitation, and the formation of an inclusive government. It also condemned the denial of education to millions of Afghan girls and exerted diplomatic pressure in response.

The closure signifies the absence of representatives from the Afghan Republic in India, with diplomats relocating to third countries. Currently, only Taliban-affiliated diplomats engage in routine online meetings, as clarified by the embassy. They handed over the mission solely to the Indian government, leaving the decision about its fate - whether to maintain closure or consider alternatives - in India's hands.

Ambassador Farid Mamundzay expressed gratitude towards India, recognizing its longstanding partnership with the Afghan Republic since 2001. He acknowledged the complexities of realpolitik and the delicate balancing act required in a geopolitically sensitive region during challenging times.
