In fact, after the death of more than 100 pigs due to suspected African swine fever in the Ranchi district of Jharkhand on July 27, the animal husbandry department issued an alert and asked them to take precautionary measures.

According to a report that has surfaced, an official said on Saturday that samples of the affected pigs have been sent to Bhopal's National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases and the regional disease diagnostic laboratory in Kolkata to find out about the actual disease. At the same time, an advisory has been issued to all the districts of Jharkhand to take precautionary measures and follow protocols like COVID-19 in case of such an incident. Along with this, the department has also started a swine fever vaccination campaign. Let us tell you that in Mizoram also, there is talk of the spread of African swine fever in wild pigs.

Dr Lalmingthanga, Joint Director, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine here, told PTI-Bhasha that samples taken from the carcasses of wild boars found in two forest areas of Champhai district were sent to the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal. It has also been confirmed that these pigs have been killed by ASF. On the other hand, Dr Lalmingthanga, Joint Director, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, said that vaccination is the only option left to prevent the outbreak of this disease in pigs. At the same time, he said that it is now believed that as per the National Action Plan, the disease cannot be eradicated through existing containment measures, as the outbreak is now being considered an epidemic.

What is African Swine Fever?- According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, African swine fever (AFS) is a very contagious and deadly disease, which can infect both farm-grown and wild pigs. African swine fever can have a mortality rate of up to 100% and the African swine virus can spread rapidly through physical fluid in direct contact from one infected pig to another.
