After crushing defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, the pressure is being mounted on Congress president Rahul Gandhi as senior leaders in the party have called for introspection and even change in the leadership.

“This was an obvious result. In the next three to four months we have to contest elections. There is no leadership in the Congress party,” senior party leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said. Echoing similar sentiments, senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the party needs to deliberate on the mistakes it committed in the national elections.

“How to improve the mistakes we committed and how to make the party strong. All of us will try to make the party strong and will try to improve our mistake,” he added. The Congress party displayed a dismal performance in the general elections by bagging only 52 Lok Sabha seats of the 542, marginally high from 2014 elections’ tally of 44 seats.

The partly will today introspect its performance and losses at the meeting of its apex decision-making body, Congress Working Committee (CWC). At the meeting, the party is expected to deliberate on why it failed to reach out to the people besides discussing the future strategies, media reports said.

The Congress chief faced a humiliating defeat after he lost family bastion and party’s traditional seat Amethi to BJP’s Smriti Irani. Earlier, when Gandhi was asked as to who would take the responsibility of the loss, he had said: “This is between my party and I. between me and the Congress CWC.”

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi is also likely to offer his resignation at the meeting; news agency quoted its sources as saying.
