NEW DELHI: The top court has stayed the death sentence of seven accused in the 2015 gang rape and murder case of a Nepali woman in Rohtak. The Apex Court accepted the plea filed by the convicts seeking stay on the sentence awarded by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The Rohtak District Court in Haryana had convicted seven people for raping and killing a mentally challenged Nepali woman on Feb. 1, 2015, after the Punjab Haryana High Court on March 20 this year sentenced the convicts to death. The appeal was rejected and the sentence imposed by the Sessions Court on the same  and fine was extended from Rs 1.75 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. The court termed it as a very serious crime.

The incident took place in The Village of Khera in Rohtak district. In this case, the convicts had brutally assaulted the victim and brutally murdered her after the gang rape. Seven people were arrested by the police in the case, while 22-year-old Sombir was the eighth accused to be absconding who committed suicide in the Bawana area of Delhi. People in Rohtak took to the streets to protest against the incident and staged a massive protest and procession demanding the arrest and execution of the culprits. The Supreme Court has now stayed the execution of the convicts till July 4, the day the final verdict will be pronounced after hearing the appeal.
