New Delhi: The Modi government, which has been targeted by the opposition over the hike in petrol and diesel prices, today said there has been no increase in central taxes on petrol and diesel in the last year. Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri gave this information in the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question.

Hardeep Puri has said that the increase in retail selling prices of petrol and diesel is due to increase in base price due to higher international product prices and an increase in VAT charged by various state governments. He said that the government is raising the issue related to volatility in the international price of crude oil, petrol, and diesel at various international fora. The Union Minister said that the prices of petrol and diesel have been made market determined with effect from June 26, 2010, and October 19, 2014, respectively. Since then, the public sector oil marketing companies take decisions regarding the pricing of petrol and diesel on the basis of international product prices and other market conditions.

He said oil marketing companies have raised and reduced petrol and diesel prices in terms of changes in international prices and rupee-dollar exchange rates. Tell us that petrol is currently being sold at a record rate of Rs 100 per liter in most states of the country. The price of one liter of petrol in Delhi is 101 rupees 84 paise. Diesel is selling at Rs 89.87 per liter.
