Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born on July 23, 1856, in the village called Chikkan in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. His father's name was Gangadhar Ramchandra Tilak, who was a devout Brahmin. Bal Gangadhar Tilak's childhood name was Keshav. At the time of his birth, his mother was very weak. Both of them recovered after a long time of birth. The same name was also that of his grandfather's (Ramchandra Pant) father, so everyone in the family called him Balwant or Bal, so he was named Bal Gangadhar. His childhood was spent in Ratnagiri.
