Mumbai: Amid the ongoing news in Bihar, the demand for a caste census has also started to arise in Maharashtra. It is reported that the Nationalist Congress Party, which is part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in the state, is preparing to meet CM Uddhav Thackeray over the demand. In Bihar, the caste census has been approved at an all-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

On Thursday, Rakampa raised the demand for a caste census to ascertain the social status of individual communities. State unit president and Water Resources Minister Jayant Patil told the media that the NCP will appeal to Chief Minister Thackeray to convene an all-party meeting on the issue. He said that the decision has been taken in a meeting chaired by Sharad Pawar.

The Bihar Council of Ministers, while allowing the caste-based census on Thursday, allocated Rs 500 crore for it and set a deadline of February 23 to complete the survey. Giving this information to the media after the meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by CM Kumar, Chief Secretary Amir Manahani said that the work will start as soon as the requisite notification is issued by the General Administration Department. He said the General Administration Department will be the nodal authority for surveying the castes and the notification will be issued at the earliest. He said that the work will be completed by February, 2023, which will be the nodal department, the general administration department and the nodal officer will be the district functionaries in all the cities, who will be able to take the services of officers/personnel of many departments at village, panchayat, all other levels for this purpose. The caste-based census will also include economic calculation. The council of ministers has given its approval only a day after the CM chaired an all-party meeting on the issue.
