Karnataka: Schools and colleges in Udupi resumed on Wednesday, a day after the Karnataka High Court issued its decision on the hijab ban. Meanwhile, until March 21, section 144 will remain in effect in the area, restricting processions, celebrations, and rallies.

On Tuesday, the Deputy Commissioner of the Udupi District declared that "all schools and colleges in the Udupi district will reopen tomorrow," but that "the application of 144 section will remain with prohibitions on processions, celebrations, and rallies till March 21st."

The authorities had ordered the closure of schools and colleges in the Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday, ahead of the High Court's decision.

The Karnataka High Court dismissed several petitions contesting a ban on hijab at educational institutions on Tuesday, stating that wearing hijab is not an essential Islamic religious practise.

While maintaining the Karnataka government's ruling requiring rigorous implementation of school and college uniform standards, the High Court dismissed petitions challenging the hijab ban as frivolous.

The Karnataka High Court ruled in its decision that the hijab is a cultural practise that is worn as a measure of social protection and that it is not mandated by the Holy Quran.
