After two days, Kolhapur's internet services largely returned on Friday. Unacceptable social media statements on Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan this week prompted unrest in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Tension in the city was allegedly caused by some young people posting offensive content on social media with references to Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan.

Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, stressed the need for the state's government to uphold law and order while pleading with the populace to be calm.

On June 7, there were violent protests in Kolhapur as a large number of people rushed to the streets to denounce the purported usage of Tipu Sultan's image and an offensive audio message. Right-wing groups staged a demonstration in opposition to the purported usage of Tipu Sultan's image and an offensive audio message as a social media "status" by some individuals. Later, other individuals threw stones at police, causing them to use force against them.

Police lodged a case against 4 persons for allegedly carrying posters of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb during a procession in Ahmednagar district. Meanwhile, the Kolhapur confrontations have sparked political squabbles in Maharashtra between the BJP and the opposition.

Sharad Pawar, president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), asserted that some minor problems were being given "religious colour "The rulers are responsible to establish law and order in the state," in a subtly critical remark about the BJP. It is not a good omen if the ruling parties and their supporters take to the streets over it and divide two religions" Pawar said.

"But the good thing is that the tension is curbed to the areas concerned. But this is being done deliberately. For instance, if someone has shown a photograph of Aurangzeb in Aurangabad, what is the reason to protest in Pune?" he asked.  Pawar further asserted that churches are being attacked in some other states, including Odisha.

Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, asserted that the statements made by some politicians about the possibility of a riot-like situation in the state and the fact that some members of a particular group extol Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan cannot simply be coincidences. The BJP leader went on to say that Maharashtra would not tolerate any type of glorification of Aurangzeb.

"Maharashtra upholds Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's values. We have all witnessed leaders making an effort to portray Aurangzeb as a patriot. We will need to find out how certain leaders communicate effectively and swiftly, said Fadnavis.
