KL Rahul has been selected as the captain for the ODI series against South Africa. KL Rahul has been given the responsibility due to Rohit Sharma's hamstring injury. Rahul is playing the role of vice-captain in Rohit's absence in the current Test series in South Africa. The Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) has pointed to the future by handing over the captaincy to KL Rahul against South Africa.

Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were also considered for the leadership, but the selectors decided to go with KL Rahul. Selection committee chairman Chetan Sharma has said that Rahul is being prepared for the captaincy.  Chetan Sharma said, 'Yes, we are looking at KL Rahul right now. He is an all-format player who has a lot of captaincy experience. On the other hand, all the selectors feel that he has demonstrated his captaincy ability. Because Rohit is unfit, we decided KL will be the ideal candidate to lead the team. As a result, we have faith in Rahul and we are preparing him.'

Rahul will take over as captain for the first time. Rahul has earlier captained Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Rahul captained Punjab in 27 matches. In the meantime, the team won 11 matches and lost 14, and drew two matches. Rahul's captaincy may have failed to take his team to the playoffs but his batting performance was superb.
