New Delhi: In Pune, A complaint has been lodge against Congress president Rahul Gandhi for hurting sentiments by calling Veer Savarkar a coward. Gandhi had recently made this comment at a rally in New Delhi. According to the complaint, Gandhi in his speech in New Delhi had called Savarkar a coward and also used filthy language and demeaning words against him which have hurt the sentiments of private individuals.

It is to be noted that this is not the first time that complaint has been filed against Gandhi for making such statements against Savarkar. Last year in November, Gandhi had said that Savarkar pleaded to the British to secure his freedom after he was sent to the Cellular Jail in the Andamans in 1911. His comments annoyed the members of Savarkar’s family and they filed a police complaint against Gandhi for making "false and misappropriate statement" about the Hindutva icon and freedom fighter.

The complaint was filed by Ranjeet Savarkar, who is the grandnephew of Veer Savarkar, at Mumbai's Shivaji Park police station. Ranjeet said, ''Rahul Gandhi while addressing an election rally, had alleged that Veer Savarkar had apologised to the Britishers to be released from jail. It's false. Savarkar ji was jailed for 27 years by the Britishers. I've filed a complaint against him for defaming Savarkar ji.”

However, Savarkar is revered by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and during his visit to the Andamans last year PM Narendra Modi visited the Cellular Jail and laid a wreath at the Martyr’s Column inside the jail premises.
