New Delhi: Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors for the BCCI, is scheduled to travel to the West Indies in order to meet with Rahul Dravid, the head coach of India, Rohit Sharma, and the senior members of the team management to map out a strategy for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023, which starts on October 5 and India's campaign against Australia begins on October 8.

The Indian team is currently in Trinidad getting ready for the second Test match against the West Indies after winning the first Test in Dominica by an innings and 141 runs.

Before giving way to a young team led by Hardik Pandya for a five-match T20I series, the veteran members of the team will play in the three-match ODI series as well.

Prior to that, Agarkar, who was named earlier this month as the senior men's cricket team's top selector, wants to speak with Dravid and Rohit in person to decide on a core group of 20 players for the World Cup. Prior to the ODI series beginning on July 27, the former India bowler is expected to join the group.

"Currently Salil Ankola is in the West Indies but he will be back after the Test series gets over. Ajit will be joining the team before the start of the white ball leg," a BCCI source told.

Given that a large contingent of talented young athletes will be occupied competing in the Asian Games in September and October this year, it is unlikely that any surprises would emerge in India's core group of 20 players for the World Cup, which consists of the 15-member team plus standby players. Ruturaj Gaikwad will serve as the squad's captain.

It is thought that in-depth discussions will be had regarding Jasprit Bumrah's physical condition and whether or not he will be able to travel to Ireland for a three-match T20 series.

Since his brief return to international cricket in a T20I series against Australia at home last year, the top fast bowler has not participated in any competitive cricket. Bumrah also missed the most recent Asia Cup and T20 World Cup in Australia.
