SRINAGAR: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Central government's decision of the 'Agnipath' scheme on Friday, saying it provides a "golden opportunity" for young people to join the military and serve the country.

On June 14, the Union Cabinet approved a recruitment plan for Indian youth to serve in the Armed Forces, with Agniveers as the designation for those selected. Agnipath is a programme that permits patriotic and determined young people to serve in the Armed Forces for four years.

Rajnath Singh stated in a press conference, "The Central government's Agnipath initiative provides a wonderful opportunity for the country's youth to join the defence system and serve their country. 'I am Agniveer' with being their unique distinctiveness with freshness."

"Many young people were denied the option to join the army for two years due to a block in the recruitment procedure. This is a fact, that is why the permission of the Prime Minister, the central government has decided to raise the age limit for the recruitment of Agniveers from 21 to 23 years, keeping in mind the future of the youth", Rajnath Singh said.
