New Delhi: In the case of vegetables, potatoes, tomatoes and onions are counted among the most essential items in the kitchen. As soon as there is a slight change in their prices, everyone's kitchen budget is also disturbed. This year, people have been troubled by inflation for a long time, but now the next instalment of inflation is increasing the possibility of making tomatoes and potatoes expensive. The reason for this is that the production of tomatoes has decreased by 4 per cent and potato production by 5 per cent this year.

According to the report, this time the Ministry of Agriculture has estimated a decrease of 4 per cent in tomato production. According to the Agriculture Ministry, tomato production this year is expected to be 23.3 million tonnes as against 21.18 million tonnes last year. This estimate has come out after the forecast issued by the Ministry of Agriculture regarding the production of horticulture crops. By the way, people are already troubled by the inflation of tomatoes. This year, tomato prices started rising 3-4 days before Diwali and are still selling at more than Rs 80 per kg. Apart from the festivals, the increase in prices has been due to the loss of tomato crops due to rains in early October, besides decreasing their supply.

According to agriculture ministry data, potato production is likely to decline by 5 per cent to 53.39 million tonnes in 2021-22. However, its production last year was 56.17 million tonnes. There has been a huge increase in onion production this year. Onion production is expected to be 31.27 million tonnes this year as against 26.64 million tonnes last year.
