'Lashkar's terrorist was Ishrat Jahan,' court acquits three police officers

New Delhi: A special CBI court in Ahmedabad on Wednesday pronounced a major verdict in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case. The court has arrested IPS officer GL Singhal, who was accused in the case. Singhal, Tarun Barot, and assistant sub-Inspector Anaju Chaudhary have been acquitted of being innocent. All of them were accused of a 'fake' encounter in June 2004 of Ishrat Jahan, Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai and two others.

The CBI court in Ahmedabad has said that Ishrat Jahan, was a terrorist of Lashkar-e-Taiba, the intelligence report cannot be ruled out, so the three officers are acquitted of innocence. And the Ishrat Jahan encounter case was initiated against eight accused in a session court. One of the accused police and complainant, JG Parmar, passed away during the pendency of proceedings. A commando Mohan Kalaswa was also killed till the charge sheet was filed by CBI.

After refusing to prosecute on behalf of the State Government, retired DIG DG Vanzara and SP NK Amin were separated from the case in 2019. Earlier, the court had also discharged former in-charge DGP PP Pandey in the case.
