The Ahmedabad Civil hospital has seen 25 cases of fungal infection suspected to be triggered by Covid 19, while the Rajkot Civil hospital has seen 10 such cases. There is no official confirmation about this infection link with to the global pandemic, even then the Gujarat Health Department is keeping a close watch on its spread and have also consulted the Ministry of Health.

The steroids used to treat against the Corona at the moment as no medicine available, suppress the immune system of the patients, causing this fungal disease. The Winter season and the ongoing Pandemic are the reason for the increase in cases, as said by the ENT Surgeon at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, Dr Devang Gupta. If this fungal disease is not detected and treated at an early stage, it can prove fatal as it erodes the skeletal structure of the human body said Dr. Sejal Mistry, ENT surgeon, Rajkot Civil Hospital.

Dr. Shital Mistri, nodal Officer for Corona, Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) hospital, Gotri (Vadodara) told the Fungal disease is 100 % linked with corona as respiratory immunity of people staying in the ICU is going down. Adds, the fungus has more chances of affecting diabetic patients, whose sugar levels are very high. The fungus seen in soil, excavation sites, construction sites where water seepage occurs and refrigerators that are not cleaned regularly is extremely dangerous having 50% chances of proving fatal if the patient isn't treated within 48 hours of getting infected. The treatment is also expensive as the medicines are costly. A mask is the best protection against such fungus, which can also spread through wind.
