Chennai: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the opposition party based in Chennai, on Thursday requested the Tamil Nadu government to keep the Pongal cash gift of Rs 2,500 in place, which the party implemented when it was in office, in the benefit and well-being of the state's ration card users.

During this pandemic, the DMK government's announcement on Wednesday on Pongal gift hampers for family ration card holders, removing the cash gift, has disappointed the poor, according to AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam. "This Pongal (harvest festival in mid-January), people, particularly the impoverished, expect the State government to offer them with much-needed support," he remarked. They want the government to keep the scheme going as a panacea because the Coronavirus shutdown caused many people to lose their jobs, according to the AIADMK leader.

The State government said on Wednesday that it would spend Rs 1,088 crore on Pongal gift hampers for 2.15 lakh ration rice card users. Raw rice, jaggery, cashew, raisins, cardamom, moong dal, and ghee are among the 20 ingredients used to make the delectable pongal. Turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, mustard, jeera, pepper, tamarind, Bengal gramme, urad dal, rava, wheat flour, salt, and a cotton bag are all included.
