CHENNAI: AIADMK leader O. Pannerselvam urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday to oppose the upcoming 'Away from Reactor' (AFR) project at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in the state's Tirunelveli district. The former Chief Minister demanded that Stalin take immediate action to halt the project in a statement.

Pannerselvam said: "If this facility is set up, nuclear waste from other states might be stored here at Kudankulam and this is quite dangerous. The government of Tamil Nadu has a duty and responsibility to reject the project in its early stages." He claims that while the nuclear power plant is in Tamil Nadu, it benefits other states such as Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry, and that it would be more proper to put the AFR outside of Tamil Nadu.

Apart from these South Indian states, he said, 15% of the 2000 MWe generated by the Kudankulam nuclear power plant was shared in the Central Grid.

According to the AIADMK's leader, "Environmentalists argue that the safety of AFR is not comparable to the safety of spent fuel storage below power stations. They contennded that the radiation is hazardous since it can be reflected in air and water."
