CHENNAI: Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the AIAMDK Coordinator O.Panneerselvam urged Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday to protect the state's rights over the Mullaperiyar dam.
Panneerselvam condemned the Tamil Nadu government's silence on Kerala Ministers and officials inspecting the dam, its shutters, and ordering the release of waters, saying such acts by Kerala should be stopped. Panneerselvam, also stated that if Tamil Nadu remained mute on such acts, Kerala may later claim such rights.
The fact that Tamil Nadu owns the Mullaperiyar dam and maintains it is undeniable, according to Panneerselvam. Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been at odds over the dam, which was built under an agreement between the Maharaja of Travancore and the British Raj in 1886. The dam is owned, maintained, and operated by Tamil Nadu, despite its location in Kerala.
On May 5, 2014, the Supreme Court ruled in Tamil Nadu's favour, allowing the state to raise the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam to 142 feet, up from its previous storage level of 136 feet.
