Chennai: Tamil Nadu CM K Palaniswamy will be the CM candidate on behalf of the ruling party Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIDMK) in the upcoming assembly elections. The proposal to declare Palaniswamy as CM has come when the AIADMK's key ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has called for the announcement of the chief ministerial candidate by the BJP high command by adopting a separate stand.
The General Council of the AIADMK on Saturday confirmed the party's decision to make him the CM candidate in Palaniswamy's upcoming four-month assembly elections. A proposal in this regard was unanimously adopted in the meeting held at suburban Vannagaram. Speaking on the occasion, party coordinator and deputy CM O Panneerselvam and joint coordinator and CM Palaniswamy approved another proposal to fix and finalise the seat-sharing agreement with the allies and to formulate a victorious electoral strategy.
According to sources, the DMDK, led by other AIADMK ally PMK and actor Vijaykant, except the Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) led by former union minister G. Vasan, has so far made an official announcement to accept Palaniswamy as the chief ministerial candidate.
