NEW DELHI: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) League Committee has decided three foreign players per team, with a limit of two allowed on the pitch at once, for the upcoming Indian Women's League (IWL), which will begin play on April 25.

The Committee decided to begin the Hero IWL on April 25 during a meeting that was held by video conferencing on Monday and was presided over by Lalnghinglova Hmar.

The Hero IWL and the Hero 27th Senior Women's National Football Championships 2022–2023 will be separated by a sufficient amount of time, the Committee decided, the AIFF stated in a news release posted on its website.

Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran, secretary general of the Federation, was present at the League Committee meeting, along with committee members M Satyanarayan, Dr. Kiran Chowgule, Dr. Reginold Varghese, Amit Chaudhuri, and Caitanno Fernandes.

Regarding the Hero IWL, the Committee decided to raise the number of foreigners to three, with a limit of two permitted on the pitch at once. This was taken into consideration when clubs made the same request.

"The Hero IWL will use a format with 16 teams divided into two groups for the 2022–2023 season. The top four teams from each group advance to the knockout round, which consists of the semifinals, finals, and quarterfinals. The top eight teams will receive straight spots in the home-and-away Hero IWL, which will be played the following season "says the report.

After much consideration and in an effort to advance and expand the league, the Committee also chose to add East Bengal in the Hero IWL season. East Bengal have asked to be taken into consideration for this season's lineup.
